1. Solo: A Star Wars Story: John and I went to see this new Star Wars movie last Friday. While it was a fun movie, I wasn’t as excited about it as the other recent SW films. Parts were formulaic, though that’s pretty standard for SW movies. There were a few too many twists and turns near the end for my taste. It’s still worth seeing in the theater if you’re into these nerdy blockbuster movies, though!
I have some exciting news to share! Today is my 40th birthday so I thought it would be a good day to announce the launch of my new website, Adventures of Herman.
A no-makeup pic from this morning after picking up my free birthday Starbucks drink.
You may not notice too much of a difference here aside from a few aesthetic changes. I had been wanting to update my WordPress blog’s title for a long time. Initially, I created the site to serve as my freelance writing and copy editing portfolio but in 2015 I started blogging there. I added “Adventures of Herman” as a blog tagline, and never really even considered another name when it came time to pick an official new URL.
Who Is This Herman Person?
When I was 16 and started driving, my parents signed me up for a AAA membership. My last name is Heiman, but the membership card that AAA sent me said “Sarah Herman” on it. I thought it was hilarious, and so did my friends, who started calling me “Herman.” The nickname stuck to the point that my friends from high school still sometimes call me Herman, and I’ll sign off my emails to them as Herman, too. So thanks, AAA, for inadvertently spawning my nickname! (They did send me a card with my correct name on it.)
Though my blog is often beauty-focused, I write about whatever strikes my fancy. And I am going to continue to do so; there won’t be any change in content here. Lots of beauty, occasionally style, with some food and cooking, pop culture, geeky stuff, and travel sprinkled in.
For those following sarahheiman.wordpress.com on an RSS reader you’ll want to update the URL to adventuresofherman.com. (Am I the only person who still uses an RSS reader? I use Feedly, in case you want to know.)
Nothing has changed in terms of my disclosures, which you can read here if you’re so inclined. TL;DR: I am a part of several affiliate and refer-a-friend programs and will make a small amount of money should you click on the banners or links on my website and then make a purchase. If there are affiliate or referral links on a post, I will note it either at the top or bottom of the post.
If you happen to see anything funky going on with my new website, please feel free to let me know by leaving a comment or filling out the contact form.
Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to sharing many more posts here with you in the future!
My 23rd Stitch Fix arrived on Friday; I’m calling this one my birthday Fix because my (40th!!) birthday is this Wednesday. Time to treat myself! At first glance I liked the mixture of colors, materials, and patterns inside my box. I always like seeing stripes and florals. 🙂 Keep on reading to see my June 2018 Stitch Fix review.
1. Crystals! Last weekend, John and I went to Northampton, Massachusetts for a wedding. I hadn’t realized that the town is home to Smith College, so college-y shops line its Main Street. You know what I’m talking about: hippie dippie stores, shoe stores selling Birkenstocks, falafel and burrito joints, etc. When we walked by InSpirit Crystals I just HAD to stop in. I’m the biggest sucker for stores like this! The place reminded me of a store I used to shop at all the time in college: Crystal Blue in Atlanta’s Little Five Points. I ended up buying a couple small stones and a candle, but I could have spent all day and a whole lot more money there.
FabFitFun [referral link] is EVERYWHERE these days. I see people posting about it on Instagram, my Facebook feed has ads for it, and the company sponsors a couple podcasts I listen to. I’ve heard some people say it’s their favorite subscription box they’ve tried. When a fellow beauty community member said she could send a friend a free starter box, I took her up on the kind offer so I could check the service out for myself (thank you, B!)!
Happy June! This is a big birthday month for me…I turn 40 on June 13! I do have some May empties to share, though I don’t have nearly as many as I did last month.
1. Deadpool 2: John and I saw this movie last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I liked it just as much as the first one, which is not always the case with sequels. It’s raunchy and gory and filled with pop culture references and meta commentary…so basically, it’s exactly my kind of movie. If you make a Goonies reference, you have my heart. Plus, the movie contains what is quite possibly the best celebrity cameo of all time.
1. Houdini Kitchen Laboratory: last Friday I took Amtrak to NYC for a fun weekend with girlfriends. That evening we went to this pizzeria in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens. We were having such a good time catching up that I forgot to take pics, so the below photo is from the NY Times’ review of the place. Decor-wise I’d call it Rustic Hipster Cool. The pizzas are quite tasty, though mine—the Camorra—was a little soggy in the middle. Depending on where you live or are staying, Houdini isn’t necessarily convenient, but it’s a solid spot to check out if you’re up for a bit of a commute.

My May Play! by Sephora box arrived the day before I headed to NYC for a weekend with girlfriends so as soon as the box arrived I slapped on some makeup and filmed an unboxing video. Before I get into my full May 2018 Play by Sephora review, take a gander at my first impressions:
