Today happens to be my six-week anniversary of moving to Washington, DC, so receiving a box from Stitch Fix felt like a good way to mark the occasion! 🙂 You may remember that my last Fix was a complete bust, but I didn’t let that turn me off.
If you’ve never heard of Stitch Fix, allow me to enlighten you. Stitch Fix is a subscription-based personal styling service. Once you sign up, fill out a style profile, and schedule a Fix, you’re assigned a stylist who selects five items for you based on your profile. They mail your box and give you three days to try everything on at home so you can decide which pieces you want to purchase. Stitch Fix now offers subscriptions for men, too! I was assigned a different stylist for this Fix, probably because last time around didn’t go well. Jenn, my new stylist, has definitely been paying attention to my style board on Pinterest because she noted that I have a lot of floral prints on there. I always feel a little extra flowery in the spring!
I didn’t leave a note for my stylist this time around; I’m still working out how much direction (or lack thereof) to give. In my head I was hoping for a springy skirt in this Fix…which I didn’t get, because GO FIGURE, stylists aren’t psychic! 😛 Lesson learned: a little direction is probably better than none at all. Here are my styling cards, which I’ve learned don’t represent the color of the pieces accurately:
The first two pieces I tried on were the Skies Are Blue Kiona Faux Lace Up Detail Blouse ($40) with the Mavi Ruxin Boyfriend Jean ($98).
I was excited to see jeans in my Fix, because I’ve been hoping to settle on a new pair. However, I didn’t like these. I’ve bought a couple pairs of Mavi skinnies from Stitch Fix before, but this style didn’t work for me at all. They didn’t fit well in the butt, the legs felt baggy, and the denim had a couple of areas that were so lightly distressed that it almost seemed like a mistake. Like someone took sandpaper to the denim for a minute and then went, “never mind.” As far as the top goes…no. As Jenn noted, I do love purple, but this shade isn’t really my favorite. Also, the fit wasn’t great—it was a little loose under the arms—and I was not feeling the “faux lace up” detail. My reason for that is going to sound weird. I just realized this as I was writing, so here it is: I went to a bridal shower last year and met a woman that I really didn’t like (if you know me, it’s rare for me to dislike someone right away). She was wearing a lace up top; why I remember that, I have no idea…but seriously, I think the fact that I met someone I didn’t like and she was wearing one of these put an aversion to them deep in my brain. Weird? Yeah, totally. I never claimed to be normal. 😛 So the verdict on both pieces? RETURNED.
The next couple pieces I tried on were the Laila Jade Bowie 3/4 Sleeve Dolman Knit Top ($58) and the Marlyn Schiff Newman Circle Charm Layering Necklace ($34).
I was into dolman tops a few years ago, but I’m not a big fan of the batwing look these days. This is not the first dolman top that Stitch Fix has sent me, and I always end up returning them. On the plus side, the top was soft and drapey and it did look good on me. Ultimately, I wasn’t that into the color, plus I didn’t particularly want to buy a 3/4 sleeve top now that we’re heading into the warmer months. I hear it gets disgustingly hot in DC! I did really like the necklace—I don’t have anything like it and it will go with variety of outfits! Here’s a closer look at the necklace:
The verdict on the top is RETURNED and the verdict on the necklace is KEPT.
My final piece this month is the Le Lis Judie Knit Dress ($68). Now this is what I’m talking about!
Floral print: check. Sleeveless, great for warm weather: check. Springy vibes: check. The dress fit me well and has a sort of crossover v-neck style at the top. It’s exactly what I needed without even realizing it! I’d feel comfortable wearing it on a casual date night or to an event. The dress also happens to match very well with these Forever 21 sandals, which I rarely wear because my feet are assholes (no joke, my right foot cramped up when I was putting the sandal on. Dumb.). The verdict, clearly, is SOLD.
Before I close out, I want to point out that I accidentally came up with a great nude lip for myself while I was putting makeup on for these photos. I guess I had Tarte on my mind after their big sale, because I decided to bust out my Tarteist™ Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Bestie. I don’t wear it often because I find it to be too dry to wear on its own. But today, I was inspired to try something new so I topped the Lip Paint with Bite Beauty Opal Crème Lipstick, which I bought quite some time ago and promptly never used. And you know what? These two lip products turned out to be an awesome pinky-nude lip on me, if I may say so myself!
So! Even though I sent back the majority of the items in this Fix, I’m excited to wear the two pieces that I did keep. Can’t complain. 🙂
