Celebrating My 40th in a Tropical Crisscross Sheath
It’s been months since I rented a dress from Rent the Runway for an event! My most recent designer dress rental was last October (and I LOOOVED that dress). This past weekend my dad and I had a joint dinner party in St. Louis to celebrate our milestone birthdays this summer. I recently turned 40 and my dad will be turning 80 in a couple weeks, so we gathered friends and family to mark the occasion!
As per usual after deciding to rent a dress, I went down the rabbit hole that is RenttheRunway.com. I always find it tricky to find just the right dress for the occasion. This time around I wanted something summery, short, and colorful. We had decided the attire should be “dressy casual,” so I didn’t want anything too fancy or fussy. The Trina Turk Floral Ace dress that I selected was EXACTLY what I was looking for!
1. Pride Product Rainbow: this past weekend, photos of products arrayed in a rainbow in celebration of NYC Pride started popping up on Instagram. I thought it would be fun to post one with my own products. Lo and behold, I had enough of a colorful array of skin care products to make it happen. Though I realized while typing this that the green and yellow products are out of order. Rainbow skillz! 😛 I know my post didn’t suddenly make the world a better place, but there’s no harm in putting positive, supportive vibes out in the world.
I’m a little behind on posting my June 2018 Play! by Sephora review. It’s been a busy month and I’m in the midst of getting ready to head to St. Louis for a joint birthday party with my dad! Plus, the weather was rainy and overcast for a couple days after my box arrived, which didn’t make for great photo lighting. I finally managed to snap some pics, and I filmed an unboxing video as well:
Earlier this month I wrote about the FabFitFunstarter box that pushed me over the edge to subscribe to the full seasonal box. Ever since I signed up I’ve been waiting on pins and needles for my FabFitFun Summer 2018 box to ship. And it finally arrived this week…hooray!!
1. Homemade Citronella Candles: I ordered some candlemaking supplies and was able to pick out a free fragrance oil sample. So I got citronella oil to make candles to burn on our deck this summer! I decided to call them “Fuck Off, Mosquitoes” and printed out my usual candle labels for them. I think they’re pretty cute if I say so myself. 🙂 They aren’t currently available in my Etsy store, but I may add them if there’s interest. Let me know in the comments if you’d buy Fuck Off, Mosquito candles!
Last week was SUCH a wonderful birthday week! Thank you to everyone for all of the birthday wishes! I treated myself to some things and John also got me some super(naturally) fun, geeky gifts that are the perfect intersection of my beauty and nerdy interests: Supernatural-themed beauty products!
Ulta has been running a 2x points promotion for the past week or so, with plenty of deals to sweeten the pot. Because my 40th birthday was approaching I decided to treat myself to a few things. My order arrived the evening before my birthday and I got right to photographing all of my new goodies. So of course I’m sharing my Ulta haul here!
1. Solo: A Star Wars Story: John and I went to see this new Star Wars movie last Friday. While it was a fun movie, I wasn’t as excited about it as the other recent SW films. Parts were formulaic, though that’s pretty standard for SW movies. There were a few too many twists and turns near the end for my taste. It’s still worth seeing in the theater if you’re into these nerdy blockbuster movies, though!
I have some exciting news to share! Today is my 40th birthday so I thought it would be a good day to announce the launch of my new website, Adventures of Herman.
A no-makeup pic from this morning after picking up my free birthday Starbucks drink.
You may not notice too much of a difference here aside from a few aesthetic changes. I had been wanting to update my WordPress blog’s title for a long time. Initially, I created the site to serve as my freelance writing and copy editing portfolio but in 2015 I started blogging there. I added “Adventures of Herman” as a blog tagline, and never really even considered another name when it came time to pick an official new URL.
Who Is This Herman Person?
When I was 16 and started driving, my parents signed me up for a AAA membership. My last name is Heiman, but the membership card that AAA sent me said “Sarah Herman” on it. I thought it was hilarious, and so did my friends, who started calling me “Herman.” The nickname stuck to the point that my friends from high school still sometimes call me Herman, and I’ll sign off my emails to them as Herman, too. So thanks, AAA, for inadvertently spawning my nickname! (They did send me a card with my correct name on it.)
Though my blog is often beauty-focused, I write about whatever strikes my fancy. And I am going to continue to do so; there won’t be any change in content here. Lots of beauty, occasionally style, with some food and cooking, pop culture, geeky stuff, and travel sprinkled in.
For those following sarahheiman.wordpress.com on an RSS reader you’ll want to update the URL to adventuresofherman.com. (Am I the only person who still uses an RSS reader? I use Feedly, in case you want to know.)
Nothing has changed in terms of my disclosures, which you can read here if you’re so inclined. If there are affiliate or referral links on a post, I will note it either at the top or bottom of the post.
If you happen to see anything funky going on with my new website, please feel free to let me know by leaving a comment or filling out the contact form.
Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to sharing many more posts here with you in the future!
