Happy December! I can’t believe this year is almost over already…in the meantime, here is this week’s Friday Five.
1. View from the Newseum: this past Monday, my mom and I visited this museum dedicated to all things news. The museum is huge! To be honest, I wasn’t super into the exhibits, but the museum has a sixth floor patio with an amazing view of the National Mall and the Capitol Building. That was definitely my favorite part of the place!
I finally received my Sephora VIB sale goodies in the mail yesterday, so now I can post about my haul! Going into the sale, I already had some thoughts about what I wanted to buy, but I strayed somewhat from that list for various reasons.
The Sephora store closest to me is fairly small and doesn’t carry absolutely everything, so I split my haul into two phases. On the first day of the 20% off sale, I went to my local Sephora and bought a few items there…then a couple days later I ordered a few more things online.

1. Brooklyn Orchids 2018 Calendar: shameless plug alert! Each year I create a calendar using my own photographs of orchids (if you’re new here, I have a blog about orchids called…Brooklyn Orchids). This 12-month calendar is available for $24.90 in my Brooklyn Orchids Zazzle store, so if you know anyone who’s really into orchids or loves pretty pictures of flowers, my calendar would make a nice holiday gift. Hot tip: Zazzle very frequently offers discounts, especially during the holidays, so you most likely won’t have to pay full price as long as you enter their current promo code at checkout. I’m pretty sure there will be Black Friday and Cyber Monday promo codes, so the next few days will be a great time to order your calendar!
I went to NYC last Saturday through this Tuesday, and when I got back to DC my November Play! by Sephora box was waiting for me. What a fun welcome home! This month’s theme is “Survival of the Chillest,” so Sephora sent a collection of samples intended to help you treat yourself and practice self-care before the full force of holiday season hits. The “It’s Me O’Clock” sack containing this month’s samples was so cute that I had to photograph it with a couple of my crystals, which felt appropriate for November’s theme:
1. Brooklyn Bridge: last weekend my husband and I returned to NYC for a few nights—it was my first time back there since we moved to DC in February! We stayed at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, which is so close to the pedestrian entrance to the bridge that I couldn’t NOT walk over it. Amazingly, I only walked the Brooklyn Bridge once in the fifteen years I lived in NYC, so I made it a point to do so again as a visitor. I went to the bridge this past Monday afternoon, and though it was a little chilly and overcast it was still a wonderful, quintessentially New York thing to do, and I enjoyed my stroll very much.

1. Someone Knows Something: I’m on a major podcast kick lately, and one of the podcasts that the My Favorite Murder ladies have talked about is this Canadian cold case series that delves into the stories of missing persons who have never been found. The first two season’s I’ve listened over the past week to are a fascinating slice of blue collar life in Canada (also: so much “eh,” “aboot,” and “sore-y”), and they’re very well researched and constructed. Season three just dropped and I can’t wait to binge listen to it as well.

1. Mindhunter: the only reason I didn’t immediately dive into this show as soon as Netflix released it is that I was focused on my one horror movie a day in October. Once I found some time for tv show watching, I started on this one, which literally could not be more up my alley (I have a master’s degree in forensic psychology and wrote my thesis on linking homicides…and of course I’ve read Mindhunter by John Douglas). I’m about halfway through the first season and am all in. It’s a little bit textbook for me at times, but it’s still fun to watch the origin of profiling serial killers at the FBI.
My third annual 31 Days of Horror is now complete, so I compiled a list of all the films that I watched this October!
Tarte Cosmetics—one of my favorite makeup brands—just turned seventeen, and to celebrate, they held several online sales. One day they offered 17% off most products on their site, so I took advantage and ordered myself a Limited-Edition Treasure Box Collector’s Set!
