1. Rockaway Beach: going into Labor Day weekend I realized my husband and I hadn’t done a beach day all summer, so we drove out to Rockaway Beach on Saturday morning and spent a few hours relaxing on the sand, watching the surfers. The tropical storm that never hit NYC was supposedly incoming so it was overcast and a little chilly, but we still had an enjoyable morning (and I caught a lot of fun Pokemon, including two new ones, while we were there!).

1. Con Man – The Game: in case you aren’t aware, nerd kings Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk of Firefly and Serenity fame have a web series called Con Man (which I haven’t watched just yet). This past week they released a companion game for iPhone and Android, so I downloaded it and am totally into it! The premise is simple: build a convention and try to keep your geeky fans happy by making sure there are enough food vendors, toilets, and activities to do while they’re there. You also build booths and make sure the janitorial staff—led by a Joss Whedon avatar—empties the trash and handles overflowing toilets. Occasionally you must also squash vermin, hire security (headed by Kevin Smith) to oust a naked granny who appears periodically, or enlist superfans to battle aliens when they invade your con. You know…the usual con stuff. 😛 Even a non-gamer like myself (no joke, the only other game apps on my phone are Solitaire and Pokemon Go) can really get into this app. Below is a screenshot of my con so far. I need to do some booth reorganizing…it’s getting pretty crowded!

#tbt to College
The fact that I started college 20 years ago is still on my mind, so this week’s Throwback Thursday is another photo from my freshman year. It’s not the most flattering pic, but it cracks me up:

The photo was taken after winter break, right when I was beginning to undergo sorority rush. I went into college without any thoughts about whether I would join a sorority or not, and by the time rush came around I figured I would at least give it a shot. So I went through a couple rounds of rush and I absolutely hated the process. Ultimately I made the choice to drop out of rush because I found the whole thing to be superficial, incredibly annoying, and not something I could see myself enjoying participating in from the sorority side of things. This photo pretty much encapsulates my attitude about the whole thing: crazy and silly. I know plenty of people who pledged sororities and liked their experience with them, but I very quickly realized that it just wasn’t for me.

1. Mr. Robot‘s Parking Lot: if you watch Mr. Robot, the image below will look very familiar to you. Until recently, I didn’t realize that it’s located near where I exit the subway in Manhattan for my weekly volunteer shift. Last week when I emerged from the F train station at 16th Street and 6th Avenue, the lot was one of the first PokeStops that activated in my Pokemon Go app. So thanks, Pokemon Go, for alerting me to the location of this lot! 🙂

#tbt to Freshman Year of College
I recently realized that I left home for college TWENTY YEARS ago. Even though I attended my twenty year high school reunion this past spring, the thought still blows my mind. So this week’s Throwback Thursday is a photo of me from my freshman dorm complex’s semiformal dance in October of 1996.

I didn’t bring any semiformal wear to college with me because I didn’t anticipate any events of that sort. I could have had my mom mail me one of my high school prom dresses but instead I chose to wear this terrible shiny white blouse with a short black corduroy skirt that had large buttons down the front. Ah, the Nineties! I’m pretty sure I was the only girl at the semiformal who wasn’t wearing a dress, but I managed to give zero fucks about it. 🙂

1. Squirtle Figurine: how adorable is this little Pokemon?! When I first began playing Pokemon Go, Squirtle and Eevee became two of my very favorites so I hunted down some inexpensive figurines on Amazon. This lil guy has now joined my Eevee on my nightstand. 🙂

Birchbox: August 2016
My August 2016 Birchbox arrived a couple days ago but it’s taken me a little time to actually sit down and write about it. This month’s box design is not my favorite but it’s still pretty cute, with a sort of 80’s retro feel (so hot right now, what with Stranger Things and all!).

This week’s Throwback Thursday is another photo from a family visit to my grandparents in West Virginia when I was a toddler (and an only child, for the moment).
Stitch Fix: August 2016 Review
It is HOT HOT HOT here in Brooklyn—according to my weather app it currently feels like 106°F outside—and when it’s that hot out I just go NOPE and sit my ass inside, in the AC. Fortunately, my August Stitch Fix box arrived yesterday to help keep me occupied during this self-imposed heat lockdown. This is my fifteenth Fix and it actually arrived almost a week early; I had scheduled it for August 18th but it arrived on the 12th!
Here’s a sneak peek at the goodies my stylist picked out for me this time around:

1. Chobani Chili Lime Meze Dip: when I saw this dip at my local grocery store it basically jumped into my shopping basket. I love trying out dips so this container was calling my name. I am in love with this stuff! It’s full of flavor; it’s tangy, creamy, spicy, and lime-y all at the same time. I’ve even started using it in place of sour cream on my nachos and quesadillas (which I make a lot of at home 😛 ). Chobani makes three other flavors as well: Roasted Red Pepper, Three Pepper Salsa, and Smoked Onion and Parmesan. I want to try ’em all!
