Item number five in my last Friday Five was Glossier’s Moisturizing Moon Mask, which I received in the mail last week. It’s my first purchase from Glossier, a brand I’ve been kind of stalking for awhile.

1. Game of Thrones: how incredible was the season six finale?!?! Days later, I can’t stop thinking about it. Now that the show has surpassed the books (which I’ve read), I have to say that being surprised by the show is even more thrilling than the anticipation and then the fulfillment of watching something that you know is coming. I won’t spoil the show here in case you somehow haven’t managed to see the finale yet…but it was so fucking great. Also: Lyanna Mormont (spoilers at the link) for the Iron Throne President of the United States.
The recent news about the terrible flooding in West Virginia made me think of my maternal grandparents, who lived in Charleston, WV. We called them Mama and Papa, pronounced like “Muh-maw” and “Puh-paw.” So today’s Throwback Thursday is a photo of me, Mama, Papa, and my sister as an infant.
From what I can gather, this might have been the first time Mama and Papa met my sister. It appears that we’re in my parents’ house in St. Louis, so they must have come to visit and meet her. Judging from my baby sis’s age, their visit might also have been for my birthday—my sister was born on April 24 and I turned three on June 13. Though Mama and Papa are no longer with us, I have fond memories of going to visit them in Charleston and playing in the creepy attic of their house. And I actually have a beautiful vanity table and dresser from their home. 🙂
Some time ago, I read an article on Refinery29 extolling the wonders of a popular foot peel called Baby Foot, and I was intrigued. After reading through the article’s comments, I decided to buy a comparable, less expensive version recommended by readers called Shiny Foot by the Korean brand TONYMOLY. The soles of my feet weren’t actually in terrible shape, but summer was coming and at a price point under $10 on Amazon, I figured why not try it out!
1. My obsession with sheet masks is unstoppable. A month or so ago, HauteLook ran a Korean beauty product sale and when I browsed it I came upon this 12-pack of SOO AE sheet masks for $18…so I had to buy it (duh). With tax and shipping I spent $26.08 on a dozen masks, which comes out to $2.17 a pop. I’ve tried SOO AE vitamin and brightening masks in the past and liked them, so I can’t wait to slap these suckers on my face and treat myself!
This week’s Throwback Thursday post is a 1987 photo of my siblings and I on a family trip in Washington, DC.
How do I know this photo is from 1987? Because I remember that this trip coincided with my ninth birthday, which means this pic was taken literally 29 years ago! Jesus! My sister is on the left, I’m in the middle in that excellent striped shirt-and-skirt ensemble, and our little brother is on the right. I’m not totally sure where this photo was taken, but I know that we visited the zoo on our trip so I’m guessing we were posing in front of some mosaic art at the zoo…but I could be wrong.
Look how cute we were! Aww!
My June Birchbox arrived the day after my birthday, so in a way it was like an extra box of birthday goodies! Yippee! I’m in love with the June box design, though one of the corners of mine got a little squished in transit. 🙁
I’m aware that my blog is typically filled with innocuous things that don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. And that’s okay. But in the wake of the horrible mass shooting at Pulse in Orlando last weekend, I did not feel right posting a regular Friday Five this week. So in lieu of Friday Five, I’m dedicating this post to the forty-nine victims who so senselessly lost their lives at the hands of a U.S.-born monster with a legally purchased assault rifle.

Today’s Throwback Thursday demonstrates what a good little book nerd I was as a kid. I’m guessing this photo was taken in sixth or seventh grade. It appears to have been taken in a hotel room, so my family was probably on vacation.
I’m posing with Sweet Valley Twins #32: Jessica On Stage, The Fabulous Five #12: Katie’s Dating Tips, and Sweet Valley High #58: Brokenhearted. I had actually totally forgotten about The Fabulous Five series until I saw this photo. I LOVED these and other book series (Babysitters Club! Satin Slippers!) and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new ones as they were released. Clearly I had a fun time reading while on this vacation, wherever it was. I wish we still had my huge book series collection at my parents’ house, but they are all long gone, donated to charity. I hope some other kids got to enjoy these books as much as I did!
I turned 38 this past Monday, June 13, and I’ve had a wonderful time celebrating. My husband and I kicked off the festivities on Saturday night—we did an early birthday celebration together because he had to work on the night of my actual birthday. He surprised me by making dinner reservations at Beetle House, the new Beetlejuice/Tim Burton-inspired restaurant in the East Village! Beetlejuice is one of my all-time favorite movies and I’d been wanting to check the place out. We got verrry mildly goth’d out for the evening, by which I mean we wore black and I did a smoky eye look. Okay, totally not goth. 😛
