Since True Detective‘s sad sack second season ended I’ve spent quite a bit of time thinking about it, so I figured why not post my thoughts about this eight-hour staring contest on my blog. I’m not a trained critic so my post will be fairly disorganized, but that’s only fitting considering the subject matter. Needless to say, spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t seen the full season yet, stop reading now!
1. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. Netflix returned to Camp Firewood to bring us eight half-hour episodes of this cult comedy classic film. I’ve only seen six episodes thus far and it started off just okay but has gotten better as it’s gone along. The weird humor is out in full force, and Talking Can of Vegetables even has an origin story. I’m so impressed by the fact that they were able to get the entire original cast—and then some—for this series, A-listers and all. My favorite moment thus far? When Donna Berman (Lake Bell) gives Coop (Michael Showalter) a gift, wrapped Hollywood style, and this exchange happens:
Back in May I took a soy candlemaking workshop at Brooklyn Candle Studio, which I highly recommend if you live in NYC and have any interest in candlemaking. Before the workshop I had started looking into soy candlemaking kits because I definitely wanted to try this at home; I found kits on Grow and Make—the same folks from whom I got my lip balm kit—and a whole mess of kits on Amazon.
When I attended the candlemaking workshop I got a workbook that listed some recommended kits and suppliers, and one of the kits I’d been considering was on the list. SOLD! (Not really, because I got it from my mom as a birthday gift. 🙂 )Continue Reading…
1. Summer means beach time, which I don’t usually get much of. Last weekend my husband ran down to Coney Island and I took the subway (I don’t run) down there to meet him for breakfast at Tom’s Coney Island. After we ate we took our shoes off and strolled along the beach, which was already filling up with people and tons of colorful umbrellas. We plan to do a proper beach day with swimsuits, sunblock, towels, and all sometime soon, but even popping by for a bit still makes for a nice escape from the city. Bonus: Coney Island is only about 40 minutes door to door on the subway from our new apartment!
I’ve seen women running around NYC wearing super cute rompers (jumpers? jumpsuits? onesies? what are these things officially called?!) this summer and I decided I wanted to try one for myself. I’m not a very trendy dresser—when I do wear something trendy I end up feeling really self-conscious about it. I had hoped I’d get a romper in my last Stitch Fix, but no luck there (on many counts). So I began hunting for a romper of my very own from the comfort of my desk.
HauteLook happened to be promoting a “one-piece” collection one day, so I browsed through a ton of rompers and settled on two short ones. I like the idea of full-length rompers, but with the hot summer weather I’m just not into wearing pants.
I picked out two rompers that I thought might work for me: a printed Jealous Tomato romper ($19.97) and a solid coral Michael Stars romper ($39.97). For some reason the prices currently listed on the HL website are higher than what I paid. Anyway, they both arrived last Friday and I tried them on right away.Continue Reading…
1. The Wolfpack: I saw this documentary with a friend yesterday, and it absolutely fascinated me. The film is about a family of seven children who were, somewhat inexplicably, raised in isolation in a housing project on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. I went into the film knowing only the information I just gave you, so that’s all the detail I’m going to give here. Have you seen The Wolfpack? If so, what did you think?
I’ve taken a few days to recover from Comic-Con before writing this recap, because it was just so exhausting, both physically and emotionally. NerdBastards.com has a great article listing 5 reasons you should be happy you missed Comic-Con, and while I’m VERY glad I did go, they are spot on. Despite the stress, Comic-Con is actually the happiest place on earth. Not Disneyland.
My seventh consecutive year at SDCC was amazing, and I’m going to go through my experiences here in detail, like a good nerd. 🙂 I went back and forth over whether I should do a series of posts, one for each day, but in the end I decided to go with one truly epic post with lots of pics!
As detailed by io9, the hoops we nerds go through just to secure our SDCC badges, hotels, etc. is already one hell of a process, and ours was no different. Because we had attended last year, we were eligible for pre-registration and got our 4-day badges last November. Yes, they sell some badges almost a year in advance! We also found an affordable flight last November so we were all set on that (nonstop flights from NY to SD during Comic-Con dates can get REALLY expensive if you wait to book). Continue Reading…
Reposted from my orchid blog, Brooklyn Orchids, because our second wedding anniversary is today and I wanted to share the story of what we decided to do for our wedding. I originally posted this on August 22, 2013.
I’ve been pretty bad about updating my blog this summer, because I’ve been busy doing a bunch of really fun things:
Going to San Diego Comic-Con
Celebrating my dad’s 75th birthday here in NYC
Enjoying a lovely weekend in the Finger Lakes
Traveling to Atlanta for a college friend’s wedding
Oh, and getting married!
Yeah, that’s right—I saved the best for last. Obviously this blog is about orchids, but because this corner of the internet is all mine, I’m going to be self-indulgent for a few minutes and talk about my own wedding.
Let me start by saying that I’ve NEVER been the girl who’s planned her dream wedding since she was little. I didn’t imagine a particular dress, a cake, bridesmaid dresses, a color scheme, music, flowers, walking down the aisle, wedding programs, place cards, wedding favors—none of it. Even listing out just some of the typical wedding planning details HERE feels overwhelming!Continue Reading…
My July Birchbox arrived yesterday—what a great treat to get the week after the craziness of Comic-Con! This month’s theme is “Go Bold,” which the box design announced immediately with its bright Navajo-inspired print:
I’m still in Comic-Con recovery mode, but I managed to pull together a Friday Five for this week anyway. I’m going to write a recap post about my experience, but it might take me awhile because there’s just SO MUCH to share. In the meantime, here’s my Comic-Con themed Friday Five!
1. Probably my favorite con moment this year: a unicorn trying to ask a question at Nerd HQ‘s SupernaturalConversation for a Cause, featuring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Mark Sheppard, with Aisha Tyler moderating. Nerd HQ is Zac Levi‘s Comic-Con offsite extravaganza that features a variety of nerdy stuff, the best of which are intimate panels that are nearly impossible to get tickets to because they only hold 200 people. These panels are notorious for hilarious off-the-cuff moments like this one because they’re unstructured and consist entirely of audience members asking questions, unlike the official panels at Comic-Con, which tend to offer a solid percentage of PR-approved banter. My friend managed to snag us tickets to this highly in-demand panel that sold out almost immediately, and as you will see, it did not disappoint.
