My June 2015 Birchbox arrived yesterday—Happy Almost Birthday to me! (My birthday is this Saturday.) This month, we were given a choice between picking a sample or selecting the guest editor box curated by The Tig. Honestly, I’d never heard of that site before so I decided to pick a sample for the non-guest curated box. I’ll let you in on which sample I chose shortly…

The June Birchbox that I received is themed “Next Stop: Adventure” with a very seasonally appropriate sunset ombre design:June 2015 BirchboxThis month Birchbox is giving out prizes. When I entered my unique code online it revealed another code for 10% off full-sized purchases of $50+ in their online store. The code reveal process was a bit Inception-ish. Codeception? Anyway, can’t complain about a discount!

Let’s see what goodies Birchbox brought me this month:

June 2015 Birchbox samplesJune is lookin’ pretty good to me!

My first sample is the amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo—the second dry shampoo I’ve received from Birchbox (the first was Klorane). I got the amika Bombshell Blow-out Spray sample a couple months ago but I haven’t even used it because I don’t think I’ve touched a hairdryer since then, but I will definitely get around to trying out this dry shampoo.

Moving from left to right in the above pic, next is the Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel, which I think is the sample I’m most excited about this month. I’ve never tried a peel before, and I’m starting to get a little desperate about brightening my skin and fading my dark spots. A peel sounds rather a-peeling. Oh god, now I sort of hate myself for typing that.  😛

The third sample is the one that I selected when Birchbox sent out their “You Choose” email: Supergoop! Everyday SPF 50 with Cellular Response Technology. Summer has full-on arrived, and when you’re pale like I am, the higher SPF the better. I enjoyed the Supergoop! CC Cream sample that I got in a previous Birchbox, so I figured, why not try another one of their products. I chose this sample over the Coola Mango Body Sunscreen; Coola is great, but I REALLY did not want a scented sunscreen. Bugs love me enough without my skin smelling like delicious fruit.

The fourth sample is from a brand I’ve been interested in trying: Dr. Jart+ BB Night Beauty Balm. I’m a little confused by this one, because I associate BB creams with a tint, and why would I want to put tinted cream on my face before going to bed? It seems like it would just smear all over my pillow. This formula goes on clear but has beads with self-adjusting color. I tested a dab on my hand and the balm did tint a tad as I rubbed it into my skin. I really don’t like the idea of putting tinted stuff on my face at night, but I’m totally cool with using this stuff during the daytime.

My makeup item this month is the Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Electric Blue. Seeing as how I went to a wedding in the Oregon forest this past weekend, I sure could have used some waterproof eyeliner then—too bad I didn’t get my box a week ago.  😛  I’m not usually one for colored eyeliner, but this is a very pretty, fun color for summer and blue does work well with brown eyes so I’m totally down with this sample. I swatched it on my hand and it’s less royal blue and more dark aqua than it appears in the pencil:

I gave my hands a good wash after I took this swatch pic and the eyeliner stayed on pretty damn well, so I think it would hold up in the pool or at a happy tears wedding.

And finally, I also got a “lifestyle extra” this month: an L. Erickson Narrow Grab & Go Ponytail Holder. Hair ties can be hit or miss for me, because my hair is incredibly fine, but this one works! I do throw my hair up in a ponytail or bun a whole lot, so this item will get some use this summer for sure—and it’s a lot cuter than my usual hair elastics from the drugstore.

So! Let’s find out how my samples this month rate on the EWG’s Skin Deep database:

  • amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo: unlisted
  • Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel: unlisted
  • Supergoop! Everyday SPF 50 with Cellular Response Technology: Medium Hazard, Limited Data (but it’s pretty low on the medium spectrum)
  • Dr. Jart+ BB Night Beauty Balm: unlisted (most other Dr. Jart+ products are Medium Hazard, Limited Data)
  • Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner: unlisted

All in all, I’d say June is a pretty good Birchbox month for me. And I’m happy to report that I didn’t get a fragrance this time around!
